CADCAD stands for Computer Aided Design or Computer Aided Drafting, depending on who you ask. It enables a designer to specify the geometry and properties of systems such as engines, buildings, circuit boards, cutlery, amusement park rides... well, you get the idea. The current state of CAD software is highly specialized, competetive, expensive, and not surprisingly is plagued by legacy code issues and de-facto standards. Due to these factors, most commercial CAD software is not at all suited to small businesses, hobbyists, or someone stranded on a desert island. In the spirit of this wiki I have begun writing down some ideas I have for a do-it-yourself CAD system. Of primary importance, however, will be getting something real and concrete out there for you to play with, rather than endlessly dragging on in the planning stages (isn't that right fenn? -fenn) You can see my jottings here: |
